Life long Admirer of: Thomas Chippendale,(1718-1779) Joseph Hemingway. Has his Admirs and  Critics.                                                                                                                                                    Mark Lewis: The Cabinetmaker,UK: Reports, 16/10/2004.

At the age of Four, some Chidren cannot decide to use there? Potty or the Toilet!

But young Joseph already new what he wanted to be.for his mother Doris Hemingway, watch him one day as he studied this carved: William & Mary oak sideboard his Father, Samuel had acquired the evening before from the auction in near by: Batley, West Yorkshire, now standing in there front room, At: Gilbert Grove, Huddersfield.

The following Day she borrowed a book from a well-to do family her cleaning for in Woodside Road. Huddersfield: Mr & Mrs Smith: The Gentleman & Cabinetmaker Director. By:Thomas Chippendale.and from this Early beginning?         It was to become the most Important book in: Hemingway Life.

Published first  In: 1754,this Product Revolutionized the Business of Cabinetmaking, Carving and Design, in the world of furniture.

Chippendale was the first Cabinet Maker to develop his own publication to propel self Promotion. by  created his own brand name,  still recognisee today, a lesson Charles Saatch could take notes.

The first edition of the book contained 161 illustrations, and today remains a textbook to rococo Design.

Created in France with ormolu decoration, England developed the into free standing solid wood furniture. But little did Hemingway now at 4 years old, anything of this history. Only he admired the pictures. And desired to recreate them himself.

One design seemed to catch young Hemingway eye,23R?'The Impossible chair' so called because, its being put aside as unachieved by all who tryed.

As a school boy young hemingway was always top in his class at woodwork, often winning Prizes for his work.

Wood work Teacher, Mr Barker, letter of intent, gained joseph his first job at:Taylor & Hobson Ltd, (1851-1992) it was here that he met:Norman Holroyd, who became his carving mentor, who explaned this firms history to joseph, Nathanial Hobson was:Thomas Chippendale & Co, first appretince in1754. Isaac Taylor, took over as head designer from,Matthias Darly, after he left in1755 to join:(William Ince-John Mayhew).to develop a rival pubication to the Director, The Universal system of household furniture.I was well into carving when I met Norman Holroyd, who would sit on my tool chest, to decus the making of: The Impossible Chair, one day he suggested a challege to me? with his guidance, we would pick the most difficult parts, for me to produce on, when it was correct? I could pick one carving chisel from his collection in the chisel roll, I won them all.

Thomas Chippendale,Certaily learned carpentry from his Father John, he move to london in 1748, where he was married. a journeyman cabinetmaker, until the Director was published in 1754, which launched him into reotive stardom.

In the Preface of the book,as well as describing the chair as more dear to him than his own Children.chippendale told readers that it sould be used as a manual.' The Title page is already called, The Gentleman & Cabinetmakers Director.as being calcuated to assist the one in the choice and the other in the execution of the Design.

More than 200 years later, one cabinetmaker (Joseph Hrmingway) would prove Chippendale's Calculation correct, by buying The Book, at the age of 32,from a second hand book dealer in : Hay-on-Wye, From then on, Hemingway( by now Working for him self) would start  incoperating Chippendale's rococo style in his own work, this proved very positive with his customer's, one great reason for still being in business since 1968,by now I had my carving skills fine tuned, to tackle anything, including: this  illusive Dream I possessed, 'The Impossible Chair', In 2000 it all came fruition, it was not lurking any more in the dark corners of the Director any more. Hemingway website reads, Design 23r,  A Beautiful and Unique piece has now been Painstakingly Brought to life,'it is an ambitious Project (not a sitting machine?a masterpiece of: Rococo Carving. a project that pushed Hemingway near to bankruptcy, when loans proved Difficult to repay.

A time which bears parall to: Chippendale Extravagant Lifestyle, after  his business partner, James Rannie, died in 1766,left Chippendale in facing ruin,

Hemingway takes cheer  too, from Chippendale's own words in the preface of the' Director ', Writes Chippendale: ' I am not afraid of the fate of an author usually meets with on his first appearance from a set of Critics who are never wanting to show their: ' Wit ' and ' Malice ' on the Performance of others: I shall repay their 'Cencures ' with 'Contemp' . Let them unmolested deal there pointless abuse. and ' Convince ', The world they have nether good nature to command, judgement to Correct, nor Skill to execute what they find fault with.

These words are silence to Hemingway, who knows he has been a  victim the the same type of critic's himself. (Dick Ried, & Paul Furgason)

For when he approached The Master Carvers Association for membership a few years ago, he was snubbed by all:11 members of the Membership committee, ' It would give ('This Private Cub ' a more Polarisable name ? says Dr J Hemingway.) Furgason say's. he has taken a Chippendale etching and done an interrtaion of it, to call it Chippendale style is just not on.

Hemingway counters that the Director is: ' A Design Book' and not an illistration ' Book ' as: Paul Ferguson thinks, to follow the Illistration to closely would leave any maker with one leg shorter than the other three.

And Chippendale's own words back: Notes:J H. 'I frankly confess' he writes; that in exicuting many of the design's, My pencil had but faintly copied out those images that my fancy suggested;and had they not been Published until I could have pronouced them perfict,Perhaps they had never seen the light.

Hemingway is also held in no small regard in the USA, where: Robert Ryan, 'President' of: 'Smith & Watson'  New York. desribes hemingway has the finest carver he has ever seen or met. after inspecting the:' Impossible chair ' in 2003. ' I'm quite sure: Mr Chippendale is looking down from Heven,' He Writes in a Letter to Hemingway, and is delighted  that his Design has reached fruition under you hand.

Yet Furguson is unbowed,Claiming that much of what goes on in ' America in the field of Cabinetmaking?is the work of Hobbyists'.(God has spoken) and he agrees the Director is not an Instruction book, But that the problem with Hemingway's work goes much Deeper. 'Someone not aware of the Chippendale Style would be impressed,' he Says, but if one inspects old chippendale,There are formes in he leaves, and you can tell were it comes from by the way of the Style of carving,Yet there is no acknowledgement of that in Hemingway's work.'

And the truth is that there is something Fancyful in some of what Hemingway says,His assertion his Chair? is worth between £300,000 and £1M is certainly isNote: the value placed on one chair? £3m. END  So,given? 'The Most Expensive Chair, ever? Was an: 'Original,' Thomas Chippendale' , Ribban-back Chair,  lastest President of The maker of the Chair. Norman Holroyd, in 1950. while working for  Sold for £386,400, (15/10/2003) last October, in London,
