(1915-2011) Albert Sack’s illustrious 73 year career as an American antique dealer, scholar and author is unrivalled. As a principal and buyer for the renowned firm of Israel Sack from 1934-2002, Albert wrote the landmark book, “Fine Points of Furniture, Early American” in 1950, known throughout the field as “Good, Better, Best”. Fine Points set innovative standards for evaluating American antiques. It became the definitive reference manual or “bible” for antique dealers and furniture manufacturers going through 24 printings and selling 125,000 copies. Subsequently in 1993, Albert authored “The New Fine Points of Furniture” based on categorizing American furniture like its predecessor, but adding “Superior” and “Masterpiece” categories. The newly published, revised and updated version of “Fine Points of Furniture” continues to serve as an invaluable guide for comparing and judging American Antiques in the 21st century. Albert Sack’s father, Israel was a pioneer in the field of Early American furniture by cultivating America’s first generation of collectors and museums with his passion for the masterful beauty created by our early American craftsmen. Israel’s sons, Harold, Albert and Robert joined the firm where they continued to develop the market for American masterpieces. Albert Sack has lectured extensively at museums, wrote numerous scholarly articles and he has appraised the following collections: Henry F. DuPont Winterthur Museum, Art Institute of Chicago, Yale Gallery of Fine Art, Henry Ford Museum and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.  Dear Jo,

       I knew him pretty well. We disagreed about some specific aspects of a few pieces of furniture (at Israel Sack, Inc.), but he was an amazing source of info on early stuff.We were at the Met. once and he told me about finding the marble top Newport piece somewhere and barely fitting it into his car to drive it back to NY. I think it was pretty early on in his career and he was really proud to have found it at the time. Lots more stories but not enough time! We'll all miss seeing him at the Winterthur Furniture Forum.-Al.
